Side Blind Spots —— The Most Overlooked Risk
-
During vehicle driving, side blind spots are often the areas that drivers find hardest to notice and are also the areas with the highest accident rates.
According to the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), about 37% of truck-related accidents are related to side blind spots, with most occurring during city turns, lane changes, or low-speed driving. Traditional outside mirrors have a viewing angle of only about 20°, and the reflected image depends on light. Rain, fog, night glare, and vibration can greatly limit visibility. In reality, blind spots often extend from the rear doors to beyond the rear axle, covering about 3–5 meters on each side.
-
When drivers cannot see these areas directly, even experienced ones may find it difficult to completely avoid risks.
For this reason, more and more commercial vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators are beginning to pay attention to the role of side view cameras --they are not just tools for observation, but an important support for vehicle safety and operational efficiency.
What is Side View Camera
- Side view camera is a vision imaging device installed on the left and right sides of a vehicle to monitor blind spots. It captures images in real time through a wide-angle lens and transmits the signal to the cockpit monitor, providing drivers with a wider and more stable view than regular mirrors.
-
Side view cameras on the market usually have a viewing angle of 120°–150°.
The combination of high-definition resolution, infrared night vision, and wide dynamic range (WDR) technology allows the side conditions to be accurately presented even in rain, at night, or under strong light reflection.
How Side View Cameras Work
- Side view cameras are usually installed below the exterior mirrors or at the edges of the vehicle’s sides, capturing real-time images of the vehicle’s sides through a wide-angle lens. The image signals collected by the camera are transmitted to the in-cabin monitor, providing drivers with a clear side view.
- During actual driving, when the driver turns on the turn signal, the system automatically switches to the corresponding side’s real-time image, allowing the driver to observe the surroundings more directly before changing lanes or turning, reducing the risks caused by blind spots.
- Side view cameras can also work together with 360° surround view system. System stitches and corrects the camera images from the front, rear, left and right, generating a top-down panoramic view, allowing the driver to fully understand the environment around the vehicle from a “bird view.” This visual integration is not only convenient for parking and low-speed driving, but also further improves overall driving safety.
Which Vehicles are Best Suited for Installing Side View Camera
- Large trucks, trailers, buses, cranes, dump trucks, school buses, public buses and construction machinery, etc., due to their wide bodies, high driver's seats and large blind areas, require side-view systems for assistance even more.
For Example:
- Long-distance trucks: Can judge the safety distance on both sides in advance when changing lanes or overtaking.
- Public buses: Can avoid scraping pedestrians or bicycles when approaching or leaving stops.
- Construction vehicles: Can monitor the movements of workers and equipment in narrow construction sites.
How to Find a Reliable Side View Camera Manufacturer
- When choosing a side view camera manufacturer, the company’s technical strength and production system often directly affect the stability and durability of the products. A reliable manufacturer usually has many years of experience in research and production of vehicle imaging equipment, owns an independent R&D team, and can provide customized solutions for different vehicle models. At the same time, have a complete quality management system and strict testing processes for weather resistance, vibration, and aging, and have obtained international certifications such as CE, FCC, RoHS and E-Mark.
- Stable production capacity and mature supply chain management are also important factors to ensure large-volume delivery. Comprehensive after-sales service, including sample testing, OEM/ODM support, and a warranty of more than one year, can further ensures long-term reliability.
